CANVAS- Attendance

Entering Attendance Into CANVAS

Step 1:

Inside of your CANVAS course, select "Attendance" in the menu on the left side of the screen.

Step 2:

If every student is present, you can select the "Mark all Present" button in the top left.

Step 3:

In order to input attendance for each student, you can click the little circle to the right of their photo.
(This will only let you choose between, present, absent, late, or unmarked)
(Present = )
(Absent = )
(Late = )
(Unmarked = )

Step 4:

If you would like to mark the student something other than the fields listed in Step 3, select "More" to the right of the students' name.

Step 5:

Once the "More" is selected, you will be greeted with the following menu.

Step 6:

In this menu you can select the appropriate option for the students' attendance.
Use cases for each option:
Present: Student did attend class
Absent: Student did not attend class
Late: Student arrived late
Excused: Athletic travel
Left Early: Student left class early
Other: Special circumstances
Unmarked: Default selection before you input their status

Step 7:

Within the Attendance menu you have the option to put a graded weight on attendance.
In order to enable/disable this feature navigate to the settings icon in the top right.

Step 8:

Select "Roll Call Settings" in the drop down menu

Step 9:

In the pop-up menu, you can choose to either count or not count attendance towards final grade.
You will also be able to change the percentage in which a lateness counts towards a presence.

NOTICE
If "Do not count attendance toward final grade" is selected.
The Grade for the attendance entry will appear in the "Grades" tab, but it will not be applied to the final grade.

If attendance is worth a grade in your course

Step 1a:

Navigate to the "Assignments" tab on the left hand side of your screen within your desired Canvas course

Step 2a:

Select the "+Group" button in the top right corner

Step 3a:

In the pop-up screen, enter in "Attendance" and then the amount that attendance is worth for your course as noted in your syllabus

Step 4a:

With the new assignment group created. You can now create a new assignment for each attendance entry that you would like to count towards the final grade.
Select the "+" symbol to the right of the assignment group.

Step 5a:

After selecting the "+" a menu will pop-up. Within the pop-up enter in your desired information for that "attendance entry".
Note:
If you leave the points value at 0, it will not affect the students grade, it is important to make all of the attendance entries worth the same amount of points.

Step 6a:

For this example I have created 2 days of attendance. I can now go into the "Grades" tab for the course and put in the value for whether the student was present of absent for the day so the calculations for their grade are done automatically.
Note:
In this test, I had one student marked as present (10 points), and tardy (5 points).
The other student was marked as present (10 points), and unexcused absent (0 points)

Important Information:

Canvas will automatically calculate the grade for you if you do it this way.
The point values used above in step 6a are only an example. You can use whichever point values you would like for your course.
